Overwintering

❄️ Embrace Winter: Your Guide to Overwintering Perennials! 🏡

As the leaves fall and the air crisps, it's time to shift our focus to the next chapter in our gardening journey—overwintering our beloved perennial garden. Winter doesn't mean the end; it's an opportunity to nurture and protect, ensuring a glorious comeback in spring. 🌱❄️

Tips for Overwintering Perennials:

Clean and Tidy Beds:

- Remove spent foliage and debris to prevent disease and discourage pests.

- A clean slate sets the stage for a healthy return in the warmer months.

Mulching:

- Apply a generous layer of mulch to insulate and protect plant roots from freezing.

- This not only provides warmth but also helps retain moisture during dry winter spells.

Watering:

- Hydrate your perennials well before the first freeze.

- Continue to water periodically during dry spells to prevent dehydration.

Winterizing Vulnerable Plants:

- For tender perennials, consider adding a protective layer of burlap or frost cloth.

- This extra shield guards against harsh winter winds and temperature fluctuations.

Containers:

- Move potted perennials to a sheltered location or insulate containers with bubble wrap.

- Elevating pots slightly prevents them from sitting directly on cold surfaces.

Winter-Worthy Perennials:

Ornamental Grasses:

- Let your grasses stand tall, creating stunning winter landscapes.

- 'Karl Foerster' Feather Reed Grass and 'Miscanthus' varieties are winter stars.

Winter-Flowering Hellebores:

- Some hellebores bloom in winter, defying the season's gloom.

- 'Winter Jewels' and 'Christmas Rose' varieties are enchanting choices.
